| A 2 hour assignment to plan and complete a short story given the Title 'A Soldier's story' |

It's Christmas Day. Not that it seems it. The tent I find myself engulfed in is flooded with the viscous stench of the other 26 soldiers that surround me. They're all dancing, with bright red Santa hats on that come with great vibrance in comparison to the dark green walls that surround us.
The walls match our identities: faded and washed due to the exposure to this blistering, weakening heat. The skyline opposite me is hazy, a dusty orange mist sits on top of a dark, depressing landscape which forces me to wonder: is it really Christmas? All I can feel is heat. The heat that radiates off my brothers as they dance, the heat of burning rubber outside camp and the heat in my mind; the heat of Christmas fire that I cherish from last year. Cheers simmer, it is quiet now.
I wake up. The deep indulgent scent of hot chocolate spirals around the room. My wife's soft, gentle voice overlooks the bell ringing Christmas classics that bellow throughout the house. As I walk towards the lounge my feet are tightly hugged with every step of carpet. As I look out of the window grass glistens, and the frost garden enables the warm feeling of family to grow.
My son. He is sitting under the tree and the frantic tearing of wrapping paper sandwiches a small squeak of excitement as he opens each gift. My wife, she sits beside him only to embrace him after each present and to tell him how lucky he is; her beautiful brown hair flows down her back. I stare at them both, what I can see is the most picturesque, priceless gift any man could ask for- a family. As my wife comes closer and her gentle green eyes firmly hold my gaze, we touch. I ask her what she wants for Christmas and her mouth opens.
A gun shot shatters my dream. I look around to find a piercing silence deafening the camp. The silence is broken by Afghanistan shrieks and we rush outside. As the hard, gravel rocks crumble beneath my steel toe capped boots I realise, we're under attack.
The previously hazy skyline has now cleared somewhat and it reveals  more enemy soldiers fast approaching. The heat is rising now and I can feel beads of sweat rolling off the tip of my nose. They resemble Afghan footsteps as they land on the ground, bold and heavy. I reload my gun. As I do so I reload the focus of my mind and clarify what needs to be done, like a bullet I'm dedicated to serving my purpose.
Gun shots obliterate any cries of help and I then look to my right. Like autumn leaves, men are falling. Their bodies crash onto rubble and a gentle sigh of relief is released from their now colourless lips. Their story is over. But not mine; not now. This is my time to stay strong, to grant her wish. To come home alive next Christmas.
